I vetri e le mura di un’antica cattedrale raccontano una storia di luce ormai perduta. Possiamo solo immaginare i colori, i disegni e le trasparenze delle vetrate gotiche che un tempo trasformavano lo spazio sacro in esperienza sensibile e spirituale. La loro assenza non è solo una perdita materiale, ma un vuoto che continua a generare immagini.
VITRA nasce da questa mancanza. Nel ciclo inevitabile della trasformazione, ciò che è stato distrutto può riemergere in altra forma. Il vetro rigenerato diventa così un medium di continuità: una materia che conserva tracce invisibili del passato e le restituisce al presente attraverso la luce.
Mi piace pensare che qualche atomo di quelle antiche vetrate sopravviva oggi in un nuovo manufatto, non come ricostruzione nostalgica, ma come memoria attiva. Il vetro contemporaneo non sostituisce ciò che è andato perduto, ma ne raccoglie l’eredità più profonda: la capacità di trasformare la luce in esperienza, di abitare lo spazio come presenza fragile e insieme duratura.
VITRA è un progetto sulla rigenerazione della materia e dello sguardo, dove l’architettura antica e il vetro contemporaneo si incontrano in una forma d’arte che vive nel tempo sospeso tra ciò che è stato e ciò che può ancora essere.
project statement
The glass and the walls of an ancient cathedral tell a story of light that has been lost. We can only imagine the colors, patterns, and luminosity of the Gothic stained-glass windows that once transformed the sacred space into a sensory and spiritual experience. Their absence is not merely a material loss, but a void that continues to generate images.
VITRA is born from this absence. Within the inevitable cycle of transformation, what has been destroyed can re-emerge in another form. Regenerated glass thus becomes a medium of continuity: a material that preserves invisible traces of the past and returns them to the present through light.
I like to think that some atom of those ancient stained-glass windows survives today in a new artifact, not as a nostalgic reconstruction, but as active memory. Contemporary glass does not replace what has been lost; instead, it inherits its deepest legacy—the ability to transform light into experience, to inhabit space as a presence that is both fragile and enduring.
VITRA is a project about the regeneration of matter and of perception, where ancient architecture and contemporary glass meet in a form of art that exists in the suspended time between what has been and what may still come to be.
