L’identità di una città si definisce attraverso la stratificazione storica delle sue architetture e dei suoi spazi. Palazzi, strade e aree urbane si trasformano nel tempo, spesso sacrificando tracce del passato in nome delle esigenze dei cosiddetti “tempi moderni”. Tuttavia, questo processo di rinnovamento non cancella l’anima dell’urbe: al contrario, ne costituisce il nutrimento, poiché la storia di una comunità vive nel cambiamento e nell’evoluzione.
Nova Civitas nasce dall’osservazione di Novoli, quartiere di Firenze il cui nome rimanda a un’origine agricola — “terreno da arare” — oggi profondamente trasformata dall’espansione urbana. In questo territorio convivono ancora manufatti civili e industriali del secondo dopoguerra accanto a edifici contemporanei, generando un paesaggio urbano complesso, in cui passato e presente dialogano in modo costante.
Attraverso la fotografia, il progetto intende testimoniare questa fase di transizione, ponendo l’attenzione sulle sovrapposizioni temporali che definiscono lo spazio urbano. Le immagini non si limitano a una documentazione architettonica, ma cercano di restituire la percezione di un luogo in divenire, in cui il tempo agisce come forza silenziosa e modellante.
Da questa osservazione emerge l’idea di una Nova Civitas: una nuova città che prende forma non per cancellazione, ma per sedimentazione. In questo continuo processo, il presente si configura come un fragile punto di equilibrio, un breve intervallo tra un passato reale e un futuro ancora immaginato, in cui il tempo sembra fermarsi a osservare lo spazio e, per un istante, sorridergli.
Project Statement
The identity of a city is shaped through the historical stratification of its architecture and spaces. Buildings, streets, and urban areas continuously change over time, often sacrificing traces of the past in response to the demands of so-called modern times. Yet this process of renewal does not erase the soul of the city; on the contrary, it nourishes it, as the history of a community thrives on transformation and evolution.
Nova Civitas originates from the observation of Novoli, a district of Florence whose name refers to an agricultural origin — “land to be ploughed” — now profoundly reshaped by urban development. In this area, civil and industrial structures from the post-war period coexist with contemporary buildings, generating a complex urban landscape in which past and present remain in constant dialogue.
Through photography, the project seeks to bear witness to this transitional phase, focusing on the temporal layers that define urban space. The images move beyond architectural documentation, aiming instead to convey the perception of a place in flux, where time acts as a silent yet formative force.
From this observation emerges the idea of a Nova Civitas: a new city that takes shape not through erasure, but through accumulation. Within this ongoing process, the present appears as a fragile point of balance — a brief interval between a tangible past and an imagined future — where time seems to pause, observe space, and, for a moment, smile at it.
