In MARE NOSTRUM, il Mar Mediterraneo è restituito come spazio originario di civiltà e come entità viva, capace di generare e accogliere, ma anche di separare e mettere alla prova. Richiamando l’antica definizione romana di Mare Nostrum, il progetto indaga il mare come luogo di scambi, migrazioni e conflitti, in cui la storia dell’uomo si intreccia indissolubilmente con il ritmo delle acque.
Il Mediterraneo emerge come simbolo di una memoria collettiva stratificata: culla di popoli e pensieri, teatro del duro lavoro delle antiche e moderne marinerie, spazio in cui aspirazioni e disperazioni convivono. Le immagini seguono l’alternanza naturale tra quiete e impeto, tra il lento fluire delle onde e la forza delle mareggiate, restituendo visivamente la relazione ambivalente tra l’uomo e il mare.
MARE NOSTRUM non propone una visione documentaria, ma una riflessione poetica sull’identità mediterranea, intesa come dialogo continuo tra culture, luce e materia. Profumi, colori e storie che abitano queste acque diventano patrimonio condiviso, testimone di una civiltà in costante trasformazione e promessa di continuità per le generazioni future.
Project Statement
In MARE NOSTRUM, the Mediterranean Sea is reimagined as a primordial space of civilization and a living entity, capable of generating and welcoming, but also of separating and challenging. Recalling the ancient Roman definition of Mare Nostrum, the project explores the sea as a place of exchange, migration, and conflict, where human history is inextricably intertwined with the rhythm of the waters.
The Mediterranean emerges as a symbol of a layered collective memory: a cradle of peoples and thoughts, a theater of the toil of ancient and modern navies, a space where aspirations and desperation coexist. The images follow the natural alternation between calm and impetus, between the slow flow of the waves and the force of storm surges, visually conveying the ambivalent relationship between humanity and the sea.
MARE NOSTRUM does not propose a documentary vision, but a poetic reflection on Mediterranean identity, understood as a continuous dialogue between cultures, light, and matter. The scents, colors, and stories that inhabit these waters become a shared heritage, a testament to a constantly evolving civilization and a promise of continuity for future generations.
