MY BIOGRAPHY
Marco Simonelli is an Italian artist whose research takes form through photography.
His artistic practice is guided by a single question:
How does Existence manifest itself?
From an early age, photography became a way of observing, questioning and understanding the world around him. Curiosity and the search for what lies beyond appearances have always shaped his way of seeing.
Before dedicating himself entirely to artistic research, he spent many years in a profession where observing reality, understanding human behaviour and distinguishing appearance from reality were part of everyday life. That experience profoundly influenced his gaze and laid the foundations for the intellectual approach that continues to guide his work.
A decisive turning point came in 2005, when digital photography expanded the expressive possibilities of his research. The freedom offered by this medium enabled him to pursue an artistic investigation in which each project could develop the visual language required by the question it sought to explore.
Throughout much of his artistic journey, Simonelli consciously chose to prioritise the development of his research over its public visibility. He devoted his work to building a coherent body of research, allowing each project to mature according to the needs of the inquiry rather than the dynamics of the exhibition system.
Over time, this approach gave rise to a coherent body of work in which every project represents a different stage of the same ongoing research. Rather than pursuing a recognisable style, Simonelli develops distinct visual languages united by the same investigation into Existence. Photography is not the destination of this journey, but the language through which the research takes form.
Today, his work continues to evolve through conceptual photographic projects that investigate the manifestations of Existence, exploring perception, transformation and the relationship between image, observer and place.
